Ben Davis May 26, Who gets blamed for killing Duncan? Who will be blamed for the regicide in Macbeth? What are the consequences of Macbeth Killing Duncan? Is King Duncan responsible for his own death? Following the metaphorical trail of blood, each murder presents a new and more developed stage of dementia. Macbeth does murder sleep. While this is true historically, it did not go exactly as Shakespeare wrote it. Macbeth, while Duncan is sleeping, then stabs Duncan with his dagger, and afterwards Lady Macbeth places the bloody daggers near to the two passed out drunk guards, making it look like they are the ones to blame.
In Act 2 there is a scene where Macbeth just killed Duncan and is heading back to lady Macbeth covered in blood. They have a conversation about the incident that took place and suggest that the fact that he could not return the weapon was because he felt guilty.
He also kept muttering about all the blood on his hands, coming from the king, on the daggers. He imagined hearing noises when he first comes in imagining people in the castle that could be witness to his crime. As the wounded captain departed, more devastating news was directed to me as Ross exposed another disloyal traitor, the thane of Cawdor. Once again, my whole body lost all sense of relaxation, I cannot believe these traitors. I felt extremely betrayed by a once noble thane.
Betrayal to this extent requires an execution!. The noble Macbeth will rightfully replace him. Since we know with some precision — thanks to the diligence of many scholars — the sources he relied upon in writing the plays, we are able to trace his creativity by a simple contrast. By paying attention to what he retains from his sources, and what he changes, we may produce — like developing a photograph from its negative — a portrait of Shakespeare at work. The witches promise Macbeth that he shall be king, but they also show him a vision of the eight kings that will follow him, all of whom are the heirs of Banquo. Later, when he hears of the death of his wife, he says:. She should have died hereafter, There would have been time for such a word. He longs for eternity, for the endless deferral of the present, but he is like all of us trapped inside too-short human time. He condenses years into moments, bitter rivals into lovers, and in particular the tragedies hinge upon the shortness of time.
A porter stumbles through the hallway to answer the knocking, grumbling comically about the noise and mocking whoever is on the other side of the door. The porter says that he was up late carousing and rambles on humorously about the effects of alcohol, which he says provokes red noses, sleepiness, and urination.
Macbeth enters, and Macduff asks him if the king is awake, saying that Duncan asked to see him early that morning. In short, clipped sentences, Macbeth says that Duncan is still asleep. He offers to take Macduff to the king. Macbeth and Lennox rush in to look, while Lady Macbeth appears and expresses her horror that such a deed could be done under her roof.
General chaos ensues as the other nobles and their servants come streaming in. As Macbeth and Lennox emerge from the bedroom, Malcolm and Donalbain arrive on the scene.
They are told that their father has been killed, most likely by his chamberlains, who were found with bloody daggers. Macbeth declares that in his rage he has killed the chamberlains. Lady Macbeth suddenly faints, and both Macduff and Banquo call for someone to attend to her.
Malcolm and Donalbain whisper to each other that they are not safe, since whoever killed their father will probably try to kill them next.
